The Bandera American Legion Post 157 hosted its free quarterly breakfast last Saturday at the Legion Hall.

The Legion members and Auxiliary served up tasty omelets, fluffy biscuits with thick sausage gravy, pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon and orange juice. The crowd swelled at 9:30 when the Hall was full of hungry diners. Workers brought out breakfast plates to serve up as guests streamed in.

Lois and Ed Lawrence from Holiday Villages said they try to attend the breakfast at least once a year.

“It’s a real treat for us,” said Lois, whose family has been in Bandera for just five years, and they sat with others from Holiday Villages to share and chat about neighborhood happenings. Their conversation was at times humorous and at times serious, and they welcomed the time to connect with neighbors.

Legion Vice Commander Gary Hetrick strolled among the diners with a coffee pot and a friendly smile. As he moved among the tables, the coffee poured, and the good hospitality was extended. Chatting about grandkids and other common topics, his sincere smile was a welcome addition.

Legion member Dr. Theresa Schultz wandered among the tables looking for a recipient of the breakfast she was carrying.

“We moved here three years ago. After attending the Bandera Honors Veterans Parade, I reached out to [Post Commander] Susan [Junker] because this seemed a great way to get connected to the community.”

Dr. Schultz was proud to talk about the senior boy to whom she presented the legions’ scholarship in May. Legion members have a long reach into the community be it through scholarships, Boys and Girls State, blood drives or even community breakfasts.

The breakfast kept going until after 11:00 AM as guests went on about their Saturday errands. The cooks and servers cleaned up the kitchen and put away the appliances and pots until the next quarterly breakfast in September.

The American Legion is open to retired and active-duty armed services members. The Bandera Post 157 is one of the largest clubs in Bandera County. More information is available at www.al157tx.org.
