Flying L’s chuck wagon dinners provide family fun

The legendary Flying L Ranch in Bandera is back in the saddle for its Chuck Wagon Dinner and Show that draws folks from far and wide.
“It started on the Memorial Day weekend and will go on through July 31,” said Flying L General Manager Kristen Tomscha.
Tomscha said the first two gatherings on May 29 and June 5 showed the event is still a magnet for families and other visitors.
“We have an area on the property called Ghost Town and it is like an Old West town with a façade on one side and a fake jail and general store on the other side with picnic tables where people can eat,” she said.
Visitors can take a Wagon Ride down to Ghost Town and enjoy Western entertainment the Flying L way
Tomscha said children love that area because they can put old west clothes and get behind bars in the fake jail.
Visitors can also enjoy, Live Country Music & Dancing, BBQ Dinner with all the Fixins’, and Beer/Wine Available for purchase from 6-8 p.m.
Visitors can also learn about Flying L’s history.
In 1947, the 542-acre dude ranch came into existence when Colonel John H. Lapham purchased it from the original Polish settlers.
John’s last name is accredited for ‘L’ in ‘Flying L’.
Lapham, a retired Air Corps Colonel, had a vision to create a place where modern people could go and find themselves lost in time.
As people began visiting the ranch, guest houses were built, and it eventually became a well-known stop for many celebrities like John Wayne, Gregory Peck and the Cisco Kid.
General admission for ages 13 and up are $35, ages 4-12 $18 and toddlers age three and under are free.
