STEPHEN W. YOUNG
Stephen W. Young, M.D. passed away peacefully on April 12, 2022.
Steve was born in Asheville, North Carolina on March 1, 1943, and grew up in the small tobacco town of Angier, North Carolina. Academically gifted, he received a scholarship to the prestigious Asheville School for Boys, where he became a star first baseman. He then attended the University of North Carolina where he received his undergraduate degree in Zoology, reflecting his lifelong fascination and love for “critters” of all types. His innate interest in biology led Steve to pursue a career in medicine and he graduated first in his class at the University of North Carolina Medical School in 1968. He always took great pride in being a Tar Heel and relished seeing the UNC basketball team beat the “Dukies” in the final four this year.
Steve had two great loves in life: his family and his country. After completing a surgical internship at the University of Colorado in 1969 during the height of the Vietnam War, he voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Army. Steve earned his paratrooper wings with the renowned 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., where he was stationed until 1971. Steve relished all aspects of his service as a proud member of the United States Special Forces.
While still on active duty as a Green Beret, Steve returned to Colorado to complete a residency in radiology at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. He was honorably discharged from the Army as a Lt. Colonel in 1975. Steve subsequently completed a fellowship in neuroradiology at George Washington University in 1978 and then moved to Texas, where he practiced as a board certified neuroradiologist until his retirement in 2006.
Although Steve had many varied interests outside the practice of medicine, his true avocation was always the sea. His love of boating began as a child, and he owned many boats over the years, culminating in his prized Siren Song. An accomplished sea captain, Steve and his beloved wife Jayne enjoyed numerous boating adventures with family and friends throughout the Caribbean. From enjoying a perfect Caribbean sunrise or the stunning view of the Milky Way during a night passage to dealing with unexpected but inevitable mechanical failures miles from shore, Steve was never happier than when he was on the water and acting as the captain of his own ship.
Steve is survived by his wife Jayne Mansfield, son Parker (Janice), daughters Catherine and Jennifer, grandchildren Carson (Emily), Jillian, and Shirah, his much-loved Tennessee cousins and their families, and his faithful canine best friend Chicopee. At Steve’s request, a private family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Austin Pets Alive or the charity of your choice.
