RE: STRIEGL COLUMN
Editor’s Note: The following letter refers to the August 17 issue of the Bulletin.
In Wednesday’s issue there was an article titled Road Map to the Texas Election Process: Part 5.it was written by Conrad Streigl. I am a conservative and a reliable Republican. But I must comment on the article. Mr. Streigl must have missed my classes in American History that I taught for 20+ years. He writes “When the founding fathers wrote… the Declaration of Independence…” it is generally accepted that although he was one of the ‘Founding Fathers”, Thomas Jefferson actually wrote the Declaration of Independence which had been assigned to a committee of founding fathers of which Jefferson was a member. So not the Founding Fathers but one of the Founding Fathers wrote it. Next, the Declaration was a statement to explain why we were leaving Great Britain. It was not on a form of government. The Document did not ay “We the People…”. That phrase ins in the U.S. Constitution ( We the people of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union…) and his whole article is about the “We the people…”. The phrase in the afore mention Declaration is “We hold these truths to be self evident.’ They are two different papers with completely different purposes. Mr. Streigl’s article is worth the read tho’ even with his confusion of the two different documents.?
