Medina plants new tree for Arbor Day

The Rose Garden Club of Medina and the Medina Volunteer Fire Department celebrated Texas Arbor Day last Wednesday, November 9, by planting a Texas native Carolina basswood tree (linden tree) on the grounds of the Fire Station.

Carol Hagemeier, first vice president of the Garden Club, secured this native Texas tree from the Medina Garden Nursery. The Garden Club would like to thank Yshmael and Earnesto from the Medina Garden Nursery for their assistance.

This planting was done as a part of the Garden Club of Medina’s Beautification Program. Nearly 30 people attended the event. Hagemeier gave a background on the Texas native tree. The basswood tree can grow up to 120 feet tall and produces heart shaped leaves and fragrant flowers. It is regularly used in landscaping.

She also reported two additional native trees donated by the Medina Garden Nursery, a cedar elm and an Anacacho orchid tree, would be planted on the fire station grounds to improve the landscaping and provide shade.

Terry Thomas, President of the Board of the Medina Volunteer Fire Department, spoke and thanked the Garden Club for their participation. She remarked about the ongoing effort by the Garden Club to beautify the grounds of the Fire Department. The Rose Garden Club wishes to thank the Medina Volunteer Fire Department for allowing the planting on their grounds.

After the planting ceremony, the members of the Garden Club met at the River Oaks Courts for a tour of the native plant garden and had a brief business meeting.

The Rose Garden Club of Medina meets monthly on the second Wednesday at the Rodney Camp Pavilion of the Medina Community Library.
