Surrounded by her family, LoReta Faye Capps Owens, 90, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, departed for her heavenly home on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024.

She was born Jan. 27, 1934, in Portales, NM, one of eight children born to Jacob Willis Capps and Nora Belle Deaver Capps. She met Kenneth, the love of her life, in New Mexico. They married in February 1954 and were blessed with five children.

LoReta showed love to others and had a servant’s heart. She never sought her own glory but did works for God’s glory. She painted beautiful works of art. She sewed for others and she loved quilting. In addition to her creative talents, Lo-Reta was a bookkeeper and also served her community as an emergency medical technician in Medina County.

She leaves a legacy of warmth and kindness. She had a heart for helping those who suffered or who had need. Her kindness made her a cherished presence in every community in which she lived. Former long-time residents of Hondo, upon retirement they moved to Bandina.

LoReta is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 64 years, Kenneth W. Owens; brothers, Kenneth, Wallace, Donald and Melvin Capps (Marilyn); sister, Wanda Gregg (Dennis); and sisters-inlaw, Pat Capps and Bea Capps. She is also preceded by in-laws, Bennie Owens (Ernestine), Maxine Rawls (Chuck), Woodrow Burgess, Ronald Owens, Preston Owens and B.J. Wright.

She is survived by her sons, Kenneth Michael Owens (Cris) of Caldwell and Joel David (Teresa) Owens of Merkel; daughters, Patti Lyn Scott (Wesley) of D’Hanis, Julie Ann Browning of Hondo and Jeanie Haby (Curtis) of Kerrville; 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild; brothers, Jim Capps and Bill Capps (Sue); sisters-in-law, Ann Capps, June Capps, Alice Owens, Mary Beth Burgess and Rebecca Wright; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel in Hondo.

Funeral service will be Thursday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m., at the Hondo Church of Christ, followed by interment at Forest Grove Cemetery in Rockdale, TX.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Superior Hospice and the loving care from Lisa, Anna, Angie and Perla.
