LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor,

Writers love getting feedback since it proves someone actually reads our stuff. However, the two letters that were published in response to my column, “Conservative Republicans, Lend Me Your Ears”, demonstrated the the senders had not understood what my column was about, and apparently had not read my second sentence.

The second sentence said the column was aimed at Republicans who were not wanting to vote for Trump. The two letter writers were MAGA Republicans and actually proved my point that they don’t really listen, or even read very well.

Both responded with standard MAGA talking points which were either exaggerated or completely incorrect. I take responsibility for confusing one of the writers, Melanie Stringfellow,, by using the word “quaint”in a mildly sarcastic way to suggest that “normal” Republicans will find no trace of limited government among the goals of Trump and the MAGA machine. Using sarcasm always runs the risk of going over the head of some readers, especially those who didn’t get the premise in the first place.

I refuse to believe that all of Bandera’s Republicans think it’s a good idea to elect Donald Trump to our nation’s highest office. Actually I know for a fact that many Republicans, not just in Bandera but nationwide, recognize how inadequate Trump’s skill set is for the gravity of the responsibilities of the Presidency. My column was designed to support them in what is certainly a difficult decision: putting country above party.

However, for Ms. Stringfellow to call me “un-American” because I suggested the option of skipping Trump’s name when they fill out their ballot, well, dare I say it, that’s very un-American of her.
