DAR celebrating Constitution Week

Constitution Week will be celebrated from September 17 to 23, 2024, marking the pivotal moment when thirty-nine delegates signed the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787.

This historic event took place in Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where delegates from twelve states endorsed the Constitution, shaping the future of the fledgling nation.

These signers, many of whom had fought in the recent struggle for independence against Great Britain, were a diverse cross-section of eighteenth- century American leadership. Seven of them had previously signed the Declaration of Independence, and thirty had served in active military duty.

Their endorsement of the Constitution was not just a formal act but a profound commitment to the principles of liberty and governance.

Gouverneur Morris, supported by Benjamin Franklin, crafted the ambiguous closing endorsement to persuade dissenting voices and secure the unanimous consent of the states.

The phrase 'Done in convention, by the unanimous consent of the state’s present,' was designed to address internal disagreements while moving the Constitution toward ratification.

Since 1955, Constitution Week has been an annual observance, initiated by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. The week is dedicated to honoring the Constitution, celebrating American freedoms, and educating citizens about its significance.

Key reasons for celebrating Constitution Week include:

• Responsibility: Emphasizing the citizen’s role in protecting and defending the Constitution, which remains the foundation of American life and governance.

• Heritage: Recognizing the Constitution as a cornerstone of American heritage, ensuring checks and balances within the government.

• Historical Context:

Studying the events of September 1787 to understand the compromises and vision that led to the creation of this enduring document.

The tradition of ringing church bells at 3 p.m. on September 17 continues today, echoing the celebrations that marked the delegates' emergence from Independence Hall 237 years ago. If you hear bells ringing at that time, it’s a reminder of the enduring principles that continue to shape our nation.
