A 10-year-old Kerrville Independent School District student has been charged with making a terrorist threat after posting a hoax on social media that threatened a school shooting at Hal Peterson Middle School.
The Kerrville Police Department received multiple reports overnight about the posts, which threatened violence at the school on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
According to a press release, police immediately launched an investigation into the threats, with school resource officers working alongside Kerrville Independent School District (KISD) officials to determine the source.
According to police, the student’s social media posts were intended to cause panic, but no credible threat existed.
The juvenile has been charged under Texas Penal Code 22.07 with making a terrorist threat, a third-degree felony.
“The Kerrville Police Department is fully committed to ensuring the safety of every member of our community and will thoroughly investigate any threats of school violence,” KPD said in a statement. “The legal consequences for making such threats, including for juveniles, are severe and permanent.”
Authorities urge parents to discuss the seriousness of making threats with their children, reminding them that threats against schools are felonies with significant consequences.
The Kerrville Police Department expressed gratitude to KISD officials and community members who reported the threats.
