Bandera residents Randy Owens and Karina Lewis are stepping up to help a family displaced by Hurricane Helene by donating a travel trailer.
The effort began when Owens, a retired law enforcement officer and long-haul driver, posted on Facebook seeking a trailer for hurricane victims.
Lewis, who had once been homeless herself, immediately knew she had to respond.
“I lost everything in 2017 and found myself without a home, feeling hopeless,” said Lewis. “I bought a travel trailer to live in until I could save for a house. That trailer gave me hope, and I knew it could do the same for someone else.”
Lewis had recently put her trailer up for sale but changed her plans after seeing Owens’ post.
Together, the two neighbors joined forces to prepare the trailer for donation, but they faced one obstacle: Lewis needs to pay off the trailer before handing it over.
Owens, with over 5 million safe miles on his CDL, volunteered to haul the trailer himself
once it was ready.
“There’s more to it than just
FRIENDS TO HELP US GIVE THIS FAMILY A HOME”
- Karina Lewis, bandera residents towing,” Owens said. “We have to make sure the trailer’s weight, hitch, and roadworthiness are in order.”
To clear the final hurdle, they launched a fundraiser to pay off the trailer and ensure it reaches a family in need.
“After the note is paid, it’s all volunteer work,” said Owens.
“We’re asking our friends to help us give this family a home,” Lewis added.
