Mata joins Navy

Bandera High School graduate Abram Mata has become the latest member of his family to join the U.S. military, commissioning into the U.S. Navy on September 30, 2024.

Mata, the youngest of four siblings, joins his brothers Antonio and Maximillian, both U.S. Marines, and his sister Sunnie, a U.S. Army service member.

Mata’s parents, John and Sylvia Mata of Bandera, expressed both pride and concern for their son’s decision to serve.

“What a sacrifice and honor... Abram’s siblings are excited for him and are honored by his selfless decision to serve. I will be praying for him even more now,” said his mother, Sylvia.

John added, “We are all extremely proud of Abram. He has excelled in almost everything he has undertaken. I am a little concerned because of the state of the world, but the Good Lord will see him through this chapter in his life.”

Abram Mata attended Mc-Murry University in Abilene before completing his degree in Sports and Exercise Therapy from York St. John University in England.

His academic background, combined with his athletic involvement in the university’s soccer program, qualified him to apply for the rank of Ensign in the Navy.

As an entry-level officer, Mata will undergo additional training before fully assuming his duties. While his exact duty station is yet to be determined, his family remains confident in his ability to succeed.

“Abram has always been hardworking and humble, which is exactly what it takes to be a successful Ensign,” said his eldest brother Antonio.
