I’m happy when my opinion columns get a response. Because people get both sides of an issue. My Oct, 8 column declared the U.S. crime rate is falling. A writer, Marcus Kaspar, did not agree.
He wrote it’s because “state attorneys and local district attorneys” aren’t prosecuting some crimes and aren’t reporting that to federal law enforcement agencies so the lower crime rate count is wrong. The Heritage Foundation wrote in February 2022 these “rogue prosecutors” are increasing the crime rate by not charging people with minor crimes, leading to a “revolving- door criminal justice system where offenders – even violent offenders – are released to the streets where police officers are discouraged from making arrests.” But 8 months later, a new study the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys posted on Oct 26, 2022, found “no evidence linking these progressive prosecutors to rising crime rates in major cities.” Perhaps Mr. Kaspar didn’t see it.
I applaud him, a retired law enforcement officer if I am correct, for his service and his concern about crime. I appreciate the fact that he took time to write The Bulletin. We all need to make our concerns known to the public.
