Lakehills United Methodist Church recently celebrated its 65th anniversary, gathering the community for a day of reflection, fellowship, and worship.

Festivities included a breakfast social, a contemporary service with guest gospel singers, and a community lunch.

Founded in 1959, the church has evolved from an open-air tent ministry into a cornerstone of community and faith in the Texas Hill Country near Medina Lake.

The church, originally known as North Medina Lake Methodist Church, held its first service in June 1959 and completed its first building the following year.

By 1965, it had adopted its current name, Lakehills United Methodist Church, a reflection of its expanding mission and identity.

Over the decades, the church has grown significantly, adding sanctuaries, community facilities, and a parsonage to serve the Lakehills area.

Under the leadership of Pastor Peter Aguilar, who joined in July, Lakehills UMC has continued its commitment to community outreach.

The church provides weekly meals, a bi-monthly food pantry, and various seasonal drives, including for blankets, heaters, and an outdoor pantry.

“We focus on the Gospel’s mission to serve the needs of our community,” Aguilar said, emphasizing that the church’s agenda is centered around the teachings of Jesus, not entertainment or politics.

Aguilar noted that the church’s role is to be “salt and leaven” to the surrounding community, with programs that promote connection and care.

“Even the children walk to church, knowing they are welcomed as active participants in our services,” he added.

Longtime members Jennifer Moore and Patti Murley, who joined in 1978, reflected on the church’s enduring presence and impact.

“We feed hunger, both physical and emotional,” Moore said, noting the church’s annual events, including a free Christmas dinner.

Murley highlighted the church’s rich history and mission-minded future, adding, “We believe we are vital to Lakehills and the surrounding communities.”
