The Museum of Western Art is pleased to announce the addition of A South Texas Aesthetic: Paintings and Sculptures by Noe Perez and Jason Scull to this year’s lineup of stellar exhibitions. The exhibit will open on November 15, 2024 and run through January 11, 2025 in the museum’s “Cowboy Artists” Gallery.
Darrell Beauchamp, Executive Director of the Museum of Western Art, is enthused to team a wellknown painter (Noe Perez) and sculptor (Jason Scull) for this first-time collaboration. “Both of these exceptional artists are committed to the Western Art genre. Their works are timeless and will appeal to visitors of all ages.”
For nearly forty years Jason Scull and Noe Perez have been friends and have shared a passion for the ranch country and its people of South Texas. Scull says, “Through the years we have shown in many of the same galleries and museum group shows. This two-man exhibition, A South Texas Aesthetic, is an opportunity for us to come together to express our individual visions of that region in paint and bronze.”
Mr. Perez has been painting and studying his craft since his teens. He creates most of his paintings in his home studio in Corpus Christi from photographs and plein air studies. His passion is painting the outdoors and his works have appeared in many shows through the country. Many of his original works are included in the 2021 book, King Ranch, A Legacy in Art that captures the exquisite natural beauty of that famous South Texas ranch.
Of his art, Mr. Perez says, “Whenever I have the opportunity, I like to study the original works that inspire me. Some of my favorite artists include William Merritt Chase and Joaquin Sorolla as well as Texas painters Julian Onderdonk and Porfirio Salinas. Most of my work is done in the studio from photographs and plein air studies. I try to paint outdoors whenever I have the chance. I believe that plein air painting is an essential exercise for any landscape painter.”
Scull, who always had a love of art and its creation, grew up in a ranching family with roots in South Texas. His interests were encouraged and nurtured from childhood by his mother. Those interests turned toward a serious pursuit in early 1987 after a chance visit to the then Cowboy Artists of America Museum where he enrolled in a sculpture workshop that changed the course of his life. He has never looked back.
A South Texas Aesthetic: Paintings and Sculptures by Noe Perez and Jason Scull will kick off with an opening reception the evening of November 15. Complimentary tickets may be obtained through the Museum’s website. Select works will be available for purchase. Beauchamp anticipates an enthusiastic response from visitors. “Both of these artists are well known, respected and liked. This exhibition will be a fine way to close out what has been a very successful year. “
