The Joshua D. Brown Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) hosted a District VIII Meeting on October 11-12, bringing together members from 18 regional chapters.
The event kicked off with a social gathering at the YO Ranch Hotel and Conference Center, where Pastor Joseph Fegenbush performed Texas music for attendees.
On Saturday, the chapter held a business meeting at Tucker Hall, followed by a catered lunch.
Special guests included DRT President General Carol Mayo Steakley, Registrar General Sharon Farnsworth, and representatives from several districts. A total of 93 members and guests attended.
Later in the month, on October 28, the Joshua D. Brown Chapter held its regular monthly meeting, which featured a guided tour of The Texas Center at Schreiner University.
Dr. Donald S. Frazier, the center’s director, led the tour, showcasing the facility’s resources, which are available for research by appointment. The Texas Center and the DRT share a common goal of preserving the history of Texas and the Republic of Texas.
The DRT observes two important Honor Days in November: Stephen F. Austin’s birthday on November 3 and DRT Founders Day on November 6. Stephen F. Austin, remembered as “The Father of Texas,” played a crucial role in the settlement and independence of Texas before his death in 1836. Founders Day commemorates November 6, 1891, when 17 women gathered in Houston to establish the DRT, making it the oldest women’s patriotic organization in Texas.
The next monthly meeting of the Joshua D. Brown Chapter will be held on November 25 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 321 Thompson Drive, Kerrville. Melanie Ellsworth, the chapter’s First Vice President, will host a “Game Day - Learning About Texas History Facts.”
Women interested in tracing their ancestors back to the days of the Republic of Texas are welcome to attend.
