DPS releases name of driver in 46 triple fatality

More details are emerging about an Oct. 29 traffic accident that claimed the lives of three Pipe Creek family members, including the name of the driver whose truck collided head-on with the relatives’ sedan.

According to a Department of Public Safety report, Carl Sidney Galm, 58, of Bandera, was driving his 2022 Ford F-250 westbound on Texas 46 about 7:45 p.m. Oct. 29 when the collision occurred.

Investigators said the pickup attempted to pass a vehicle on a blind curve in a no-passing zone on a hill in the 7600 block of 46.

Galm’s truck then collided head-on with an eastbound 2015 Toyota Corolla driven by Roger Waid.

“The report indicated speed was (also) a factor to the severity of the crash,” the DPS release reads.

The collision led to the deaths of Waid, 50, his wife Patricia Waid, 53, and their daughter, Blake Lynn Waid, 14, five miles west of Boerne.

The force of the impact sent the Waid vehicle, traveling at the speed limit, backward, through a roadside ditch and into a fence, according to traffic investigators.

Galm’s truck flipped, rolling once, before landing upright and facing east, in the direction he had come.

Authorities arriving at the scene initially recorded the car with just two front-seat passengers. It was 10 minutes before they were able to discover the 14-year-old daughter in the Corolla’s collapsed back seat area, according to reports.

The family members were pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency Medical Services took Galm to a hospital in the region, investigators said.

Officials said the investigation is continuing.

State law gives a law-enforcement officer investigating a crash up to 10 days to submit a report to the Texas Department of Transportation, which then can take up to four days to review and certify the report.

The funeral for the Waids was last Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Pedrotti Ranch in Helotes.

The Pipe Creek General Store will be hosting a benefit for the Waid family on Sunday, Dec. 1 from 1-10 p.m. including music, food and auction items.
