Governor swears in new DPS director

“AS DIRECTOR, IT’S MY JOB TO MAKE TEXAS SAFER AND IMPROVE THE DEPARTMENT”

- Director Martin

Governor Greg Abbott today swore in Freeman F. Martin as the 14th Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) at DPS Headquarters in Austin.

“Freeman Martin brings an extraordinary wealth of experience to this position,” said Governor Abbott. “From starting as a trooper to becoming a Texas Ranger to serving as Senior Deputy Director of DPS, he has the knowledge at every level and on every subject critical to leading this remarkable agency. What matters even more is what lies in the heart of a leader—true dedication to the rule of law.”

Director Martin, who previously served as Senior Deputy Director for DPS, thanked Governor Abbott and the Public Safety Commission for their trust.

“Today, Texas faces the most significant public safety and homeland security threats of our lifetime, and addressing those threats is no small task,” Martin said. “As Director, it’s my job to make Texas safer and improve the department. With the talent we have across the state, we will make that happen.”

Martin began his DPS career in 1990 as a Texas Highway Patrol trooper and has since served in various roles, including Texas Ranger Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain. In 2018, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

The ceremony was attended by Public Safety Commission Chairman Steven Mach, former DPS Director Steve McCraw, and other law enforcement and DPS leaders.
