On Dec. 2, the Regent, officers and members of the Major James Kerr Chapter, NSDAR of Kerrville, Texas celebrated the Golden Anniversary of the Chapter at the Inn of the Hills Conference Center.
The event was well-attended and included many honored guests from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and local government.
Several former Regents of the Chapter were recognized. During the program Regent, Dawn Collum presented The Hannah White Arnett Medal to William R. Sole, President of the Hill Country Chapter, SAR and the Excellence in Historic Preservation Award to the Kerr County Historical Commission.
Barbara Oates, Chair accepted the award. In addition, Sarah Hill Kocurek, Director of the Hill Country Veteran Center, Nathan Vick, Site Administrator for the Kerrville VA Medical Center and Jenna Sanchez, Kerr County Veteran Service Officer were recognized for their service to Veterans.
Shirley Hill of the Hill Country Veteran Center was given the Veteran Volunteer Award. Mayor Judy Eychner presented a proclamation naming Dec. 7 as Major James Kerr Chapter, NSDAR, Day.
Judge Rob Kelly presented a Commissioners’ Court Resolution that recognized the chapter’s fifty years of service to the local community.
There were many Vietnam veterans and spouses of veterans in the audience, and they were all presented with a special lapel pin as a thank you for their service.
The Major James Kerr Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was officially organized in Kerrville on Friday Dec. 7, 1973.
The chapter was named for Major James Kerr, who served in the War of 1812 and was a Major in the Texas Revolution. Both Kerrville and Kerr County are named after him.
There were twenty-four charter members in 1973, and the members of the first Executive Board were Mrs. Herbert Long, Regent, Mrs. Thomas M. Daniel, Mrs. John W. Bouton, Mrs. James C. Beddingfield, Mrs. John W. Bouton, Mrs. Howard Tyson, Mrs. Charles Brindle and Mrs. Sylvester B. Howell.
DAR has 190,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and several foreign countries. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership.
DAR members promote historic preservation, education and patriotism via commemorative events, scholarships and educational initiatives, citizenship programs, service to veterans, meaningful community service and more.
