The Caddel-Smith Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) held its rescheduled monthly meeting on Jan. 22 at 10:33 a.m., after postponing from its usual Jan. 9 date due to weather.
First Vice President Susan Knight introduced guest speaker David Towler, a San Diego, Texas- based attorney and musician who serves as treasurer on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of America in Alice, Texas.
Towler entertained attendees with traditional cowboy songs, original compositions and poetry.
During the business session, Knight announced the next chapter meeting will be held Feb. 13, featuring storyteller Dub Suttles of Leakey.
Second Vice President Diane Mann reminded members that the chapter’s next Honor Day, Mirabeau B. Lamar Day, is Jan. 26.
Chaplain Sherri Dillard reported sending cards of encouragement to members and families facing illness.
Registrar Roberta Himebrook announced that membership applications for Ellen Schueling and her daughter, Lauren Busse, have been approved, and they will be welcomed at the February meeting.
Applications for Jan Twomey and her daughter, Elizabeth Marwaha, have also been approved, with their welcome set for April.
A posthumous application for Donna Coffee Kellar has been submitted for approval, and two additional prospective members are working on their applications.
Billie Nast, CRT sponsor, said she is mailing three applications for one family.
Meanwhile, Sheryl Burkeen has accepted the nomination as the chapter’s new president.
The following officers will continue in their roles: Diane Mann as second vice president, Sherri Dillard as chaplain, Brenda Humphrey as recording secretary and publicity chair, Roberta Himebrook as registrar, and Jakelynn Crawford as historian.
The positions of first vice president, treasurer and education chair remain open.
Members were encouraged to continue supporting the chapter’s service project for the Uvalde Border Patrol.
Several donations collected at the meeting will be delivered to the Uvalde Border Patrol office.
The meeting adjourned at 12:46 p.m.
