A mother and her young daughter died early Sunday morning in a house fire off Old Castroville Highway. Officials say said the fire, which appears to have been caused by a space heater, quickly spread, trapping the two inside.
Authorities responded to the emergency call at 5:55 a.m. on Feb. 23, but the fire had already engulfed the home by the time they arrived.
The victims have been identified as a Bandera ISD employee and her daughter, a student at Alkek Elementary.
Bandera ISD Superintendent Gary Bitzkie addressed the tragedy in an email to district families, expressing the district’s condolences and offering support services.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the tragic news of the passing of one of our Alkek students and a beloved Alkek employee in a house fire last night,” Bitzkie wrote. “Our deepest condolences go out to their family, friends, and all who knew and loved them.”
Counselors are available at Alkek Elementary for students and staff in need of support.
