Sir Philip Bobbitt, a noted legal scholar and professor who splits his time between the University of Texas at Austin and Columbia University, spoke to the Bandera Democrat Club on Saturday, March 8, at the Silver Sage Community Center.
A longtime Democrat and nephew of President Lyndon Johnson, Bobbitt addressed concerns about the federal government, emphasizing that “the state is not sovereign; the people are sovereign.”
He illustrated this by comparing the pages in the U.S. Constitution dedicated to each branch of government, highlighting the legislative branch’s prominence.
Bobbitt also discussed birthright citizenship, the constitutional prohibition against three presidential terms, and what he described as an attack on the rule of law in the current political climate.
On foreign policy, he outlined the U.S. strategies of rollback, containment, and accommodation, noting that the country’s self-interest is often tied to international aid efforts.
In meeting business, Club President Anna Montague asked members to donate five-gallon buckets for trash pickup.
Bandera County Democratic Chair Lynn Oliver discussed the upcoming primary election and election worker training, announcing she would not seek reelection as county chair.
She also shared that the Texas Progressive Caucus endorsed Kendall Scudder for state Democratic Party chair and encouraged members to testify at the March 11 hearing on school vouchers.
The meeting concluded with discussions on securing a campaign office and sponsorships for the Bunny Run, hosted by the Arthur Nagel Community Clinic.
David Black was introduced as head of the Communications Committee, distributing surveys to gauge member interests.
