There be poets among us

April is National Poetry Month and, to celebrate our poets, there are two events especially pertinent to our local and state readers and writers.

On the local level, in anticipation of National Poetry Month, local poets are holding a first-time Poetry Event on March 28, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the cafeteria of the Silver Sage Resource Center, located at 803 Buck Creek in Bandera.

The Poetry Event is sponsored through the City of San Antonio, Department of Culture, Outlier Poetry program, in association with the City of San Antonio’s NPMSA25 calendar.

The event is free and open to the public and all ages are welcome.

Bring your original poem, or a favorite poem, for a reading. Students are encouraged to read, and the rules only state that the poems are family friendly, without profanity and are not x-rated.

On the state level, in preparation for National Poetry Month the Academy of American Poets awarded our very own 2024 Texas State Poet Laureate, Amanda Johnston, $50,000 to fund her project, “Praisesong for the People.”

Johnston is commissioning 70 poets across seven Texas regions that celebrate everyday people. These poets are to write original poems and they will travel around Texas and do readings of their works. She wants to make poetry available to all.

As she says on her website, praisesongforthepeople.com, “Let’s spread love through letters and verse.”
