The annual State of the Union address is an opportunity for American presidents to highlight their priorities, accomplishments and aspirations, while inspiring the people.
According to a CBS News poll of 1,207 Americans following President Trump’s speech, 76 percent of respondents expressed approval.
Over two-thirds said the speech made them feel hopeful, while 54 percent said it made them feel proud.
Pride in America has been waning over the past few years, perhaps due to a never-ending assault on our nation’s founding by radicals who seem to be ashamed of the nation they live in.
Thus, it’s a good thing that two-thirds of respondents felt that Trump spent “a lot” of time speaking about issues they cared about.
The poll found a significant majority of people who watched the speech said they liked Trump’s plans for reducing federal spending and waste (77 percent), immigration (77 percent), and ending the Russia-Ukraine war (73 percent).
Support for reducing wasteful spending runs counter to signs held by many Democrats that read “Musk steals.” This made me think as to just who is stealing from whom?
Are Democrats really saying that removing waste and fraud from federal spending is a bad thing? Do they really support spending more than $9 million of USAID’s “humanitarian” aid intended to feed civilians in Syria that ended up in the hands of violent terrorists, including an Al-Queda affiliate in Iraq?
Or how about $1.5 million to “advance diversity, equity, and inclusion” in Serbia’s workplaces?
Who comes up with these ideas, and why do Democrats take umbrage at the exposure of such ridiculous waste of taxpayer dollars?
While 68 percent of viewers said that President Trump’s speech made them feel hopeful, 16 percent said it made them feel angry.
Anger seems to be a growing trend on the left. Numerous Democrat Congress members are using profanity in speeches and interviews as they flail in opposition to the new administration’s initiatives. Can’t they do better than curse in articulating thoughts on public policy?
This anger extended to an embarrassing silence from Democrats when he highlighted some great American success stories.
While the State of the Union can often times be partisan in nature, and neither party can claim to be fully innocent in its behavior toward the other party, how could any American with an ounce of compassion not stand and cheer for D.J. Daniel, the 13-yearold brain cancer survivor whose wish is to serve in law enforcement.
D.J.’s father Theodis says his son’s journey has been tough, but the family hopes to inspire others.
“We just have to turn something that most of us see as bad and tragic into something positive. We’re supposed to be in the business of trying to inspire people to be a better version of themselves despite what you’re going through.”
Theodis praised D.J.’s perseverance, adding “DJ doesn’t give up, he doesn’t complain, he just gets out and does it with no excuses.”
Trump then introduced Jason Hartley, a California high school senior who dreams of attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
With Republicans erupting in applause, Trump stated. “That’s a hard one to get into, but I’m pleased to inform you that your application has been accepted. You will soon be joining the Corps of Cadets.”
Jason shared his longtime dream of following his father and other family members into the military, noting how they loved our country.
The TV then zoomed in on a scowling Bernie Sanders during this part of the speech. Who can scowl at such a positive story?
And how could Democrats sit on their hands and remain quiet when Trump announced the renaming of a wildlife refuge in honor of Jocelyn Nungaray, the young Houston girl murdered by two illegal aliens. Is their silence due to their approval of the open borders policies of the incompetent Biden administration?
Childish behavior is expected from children, not grown adults who serve in Congress. It’s long past time to stop the partisan witch hunts and get down to the business of providing responsible governance to the American people.
Let’s hope that the strong speech that President Trump delivered will begin a process of a better and brighter future for all Americans.
