Bandera High School hosted the first day of the UIL Academic District competition on March 29, with the Bulldogs securing 10 regional qualifications and two alternate positions.
Leading the way in individual events, Edyn Knudtson placed first in Ready Writing, with Mary Freeman finishing second; both qualified for regionals.
Vanessa Perez won first place in Spelling & Vocabulary, earning a regional spot, while Lexie McKenzie placed fourth as an alternate.
In journalism events, Ruffin Scartocci (second place) and Ozzie Knowles (third place) qualified in News Writing, while Carter Rissmiller placed fourth as an alternate. Knowles also secured a regional spot in Copy Editing (third place), Feature Writing (first place), Editorial Writing (first place) and Headline Writing (first place). Scartocci qualified in Editorial Writing (third place) and placed sixth in Headline Writing.
The Journalism and Spelling teams both won first place, coached by Stephanie Jones, Brady Keane and Ginger Frye.
BHS staff members, including meet coordinator Emily Huber, the custodial and kitchen staff, and the academic coaching team, were recognized for their efforts in organizing the event.
The second day of the district competition, featuring speech and debate events, will take place next Saturday. Regional qualifiers will compete in Corpus Christi in April.
