County extends burn ban

The Bandera County River Authority and Groundwater District upgraded the county’s drought status to exceptional last week, prompting the Bandera County Commissioners’ Court to vote in favor of continuing the burn ban.

Bandera County Fire Marshal Jason Rutherford said a major fire, which started March 15 on Roundup Trail off Hunters Road, quickly spread to Pony Road and Saddle Drive.

Responders cut fences to help animals escape while convincing hesitant homeowners to evacuate.

Within an hour, more than 100 emergency personnel were on the scene, aided by the Texas Forest Service, which deployed air support to drop fire retardant.

The fire slowed when it reached overgrazed properties and natural fire breaks near Elm Pass Road, where Rutherford said responders made their “last stand.” Bandera Fire and Rescue remained on-site overnight to prevent flareups amid forecasted 40 mph winds.

Investigators determined the fire was sparked by people grinding an old RV for scrap, igniting 1,600 tires.

Firefighters spent hours the following day containing hot spots.

The fire destroyed 11 structures, displacing six families, and some animals did not survive.

So far this year, the county has reported 15 brush fires, nine structure fires, and 16 other fires, many caused by equipment use such as grinding and welding. Two people have been injured in unrelated fires, with one still in intensive care.

Emergency Management Coordinator Judy Lefevers emphasized fire prevention, urging residents to comply with burn bans, avoid outdoor grilling on Red Flag Warning Days, and use caution with cigarettes and welding equipment.

The Silver Sage assisted displaced families, ensuring all six households found new housing.

A crawfish boil fundraiser benefiting Bandera County fire departments is scheduled for April 1112 at Mansfield Park.
