Bandera County officials recognized the critical work of emergency dispatchers during the April 10 meeting of Commissioners Court, coinciding with a statewide proclamation by Gov. Greg Abbott declaring April 13– 19 as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

As dispatch team members stood before the court, County Judge Richard Evans acknowledged the challenging and often traumatic nature of their work.

“These are some of the worst situations to deal with and very stressful,” Evans said. “We’re very fortunate that we have some dedicated people that have been taking care of the county for years and years and years. Amber, we appreciate your leadership.”

The court also approved a resolution supporting Abbott’s proclamation, which highlights the role of dispatchers, 9-1-1 operators, and communication specialists in saving lives and maintaining public safety.

According to the proclamation, more than 4,000 public safety telecommunicators serve across Texas, linking residents in crisis with law enforcement, fire departments, and medical teams. “Their calm, disciplined demeanor strengthens those in need,” Abbott wrote.

Bandera County 911/ Emergency Management Coordinator Judy Lefevers also offered praise for the team.

“Our dispatchers are the lifeline between someone who needs help and those who respond to give it,” she told the Bulletin. “We are thankful every day for their tireless efforts.”

Lefevers added a quote she said embodies the heart of the job: “To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world.”

The Governor’s proclamation urges all Texans to recognize the vital role dispatchers play and to observe the week with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
