Man dies in fire

A 79-year-old man died Tuesday afternoon in a house fire on Green Valley Drive, according to local officials.

Pipe Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Bandera Fire and Rescue and Castle Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze on the 200th block of Green Valley Drive at 2:08 p.m. April 15.

Fire Marshal Jason Rutherford said the fire started on the stove, where something appeared to have been left unattended.

The flames spread quickly, trapping the home’s only occupant at the time, Martin Huegele, in a bedroom. F Firefighters with Pipe Creek VFD reached the bedroom and performed CPR, but Huegele was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire was under control within an hour, Rutherford said, but the house was deemed a total loss and uninhabitable.

Huegele’s wife, Teresa, was at work when the fire broke out and was notified shortly after.

“I contacted the Red Cross to assist her,” Rutherford said. “Just a horrible situation.”
