After months of delays tied to litigation and recent changes in standardized test scoring, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has released the 2022–2023 accountability ratings for public schools across the state.
Both Bandera ISD and Medina ISD received overall C ratings in the newly published results. Bandera ISD scored 79 out of 100, while Medina ISD received a 70.
The accountability ratings — which assign A through F letter grades to school districts — were delayed by a legal challenge over changes in how STAAR tests were graded, leading some districts to question whether the updated system fairly measured student performance.
Earlier this month, a judge cleared the way for the TEA to move forward with the release, and those ratings were posted Thursday morning.
According to TEA’s website, the accountability system "measures how much students are learning in each grade and whether or not they are ready for the next grade. It also shows how well a school or district prepares their students for success after high school in college, the workforce, or the military."
The C grades for Bandera and Medina ISDs reflect multiple factors, including academic achievement, student progress and efforts to close learning gaps among student groups.
While these results are based on 2022–2023 data, they mark the first formal assessment since significant changes were made to the STAAR exam format and scoring.
TEA Commissioner Mike Morath emphasized that the A-F system remains a vital tool for school boards and communities to track performance and identify areas for improvement.
