Longtime Sabinal ISD superintendent Richard Grill has announced his plans to retire after submitting his resignation to the board of trustees on Jan. 9.

Grill, who still lives in Bandera, spent four years as Assistant Superintendent of Bandera ISD.

“Over the past 41 years, I have had the privilege of serving in various capacities within the field of public education. It has been a profoundly rewarding experience to witness the growth and development of countless students, teachers and staff members during my tenure,” Grill said.

“My 16-year journey as the Superintendent of Sabinal ISD has been a particularly remarkable chapter in my life. I have had the honor of working alongside incredibly dedicated professionals, passionate parents, resilient students and a very supportive Board who have made Sabinal ISD a true cornerstone of this community,” Grill stated.

Grill began his career as a high school teacher for 10 years in Burnet CISD, then two years as a middle school assistant principal in East Austin, moving to the elementary level as an assistant principal then principal for nine years.

As the principal of Hill Country Elementary, he led the campus to a Recognized status in his first year, then 3 consecutive exemplary ratings.

He was promoted to Assistant Superintendent in Bandera ISD, where he served four years before becoming the superintendent of Sabinal ISD in 2008.

Grill has completed nearly $22.5 million in school renovations and new facilities in Sabinal ISD, with $6.95 million coming from voter approved bonds.

Sabinal ISD academic rating is a “B” with the elementary enjoying an “A” rating and the high school having a “B” rating.

“As Superintendent Grill embarks on this well-deserved chapter of retirement, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for his decades of service and leadership in public education. We recognize the indelible mark he has left on Sabinal ISD and the countless lives he has touched throughout his remarkable career,” stated board president Bernie Garcia.

The search for a new superintendent will begin soon with a hope of naming the new candidate by May 2024.
