The Bandera Lady Bulldog basketball team won their home opener by a score of 66 to 30 against the Gonzales Lady Apaches.
The Bulldogs held the Lady Apaches to 4 points in the first quarter. At the 3-minute mark, Gabby Barrera made a slick fast break to the basket. Calie Tripp joined her with a fast break of her own.
The Bulldogs ended the quarter with a score of 21 to the Apache’s 4.
The second quarter started out with a 3 point basket from downtown by Barrera. The team pulled apart the Apache’s defense and hit critical outside 3 pointers.
Madelyn Garza’s 3 pointer from the baseline upped the Bulldogs score to 39 to the Apaches’ 10.
The game became a runaway during the third quarter when a fastbreak and steal by Brooklyn Grabs brought the Bulldogs to a score of 50 to Gonzales’ 16. The Lady Bulldogs were confident and showed their control of the game.
The play of Barrera and sophomore Taytum Moeller were good indications of a team with their head in the game. The Lady Bulldogs were on a roll.
The fourth quarter showed that the Bulldogs were in excellent form as another fast break by Barrera caused the final score to soar to 66 while the Apaches stayed at 30.
The Bulldogs put on an amazing show in this non-conference game. They had 52 rebounds to Gonzales’ 33.
The Bulldogs had 12 assists, 31 steals, and 2 blocked shots. While the Bulldogs’ field goal percentage was 36%, its 3-point percentage was an outstanding 80%.
The only area of disappointment was the free throw percentage at 46%. If the Lady Bulldogs can increase that percentage, they will see a lot of W’s in their future.
The Lady Bulldogs took on Floresville on Tuesday, November 7 (scores not available at press time).
They will return home to play on Friday, November 10 against IDEA South Flores. The games are at 5:00 and 6:30.
