Bandera County officials honored the service of Silver Sage Hill Country Resource Center and Lakehills United Methodist Church at the Feb. 8 Commissioners’ Court.

Emergency Management Coordinator Judy Lefevers presented to the Court, stating, “This letter is to formally recognize your commitment to the well-being of the residents of Bandera county.

“During the period of Jan. 14-17, 2024, when the temp struck dropped below freezing each night, you opened your doors and provided a warming center for some of our most vulnerable residents.

“Your facility provided a warm safe place to sleep, hot meals for those who would have otherwise gone without, and in some instances, blankets, coats and space heaters for those who had none.

“Your effort describes the true meaning of service to the community. Always ready to assist in any way possible, your organization is an integral part of this community and for that we are most grateful. Thank you for exemplifying the values of Bandera County.”

A representative from United Methodist responded by saying that Reverand Baird, who could not be present, wanted everyone to know that it was their honor to serve others, emphasizing that it took many people, including others in the community who gave donations.

“It was a big effort on many parts,” said the representative.

Silver Sage CEO Art Crawford, said, “This is amazing. Like the Methodist church, we were open 24 hours for a few days. We had one lady that spent the night with a service dog.

“We had another woman with a one-month-old baby, their electricity went out in their trailer. 40-50-80 people coming out through the day, having meals, doing puzzles. We did what we could to keep them warm and entertained. Overall, it was a pleasure to work with Judy.”

Commissioner Jody Rutherford expressed his gratitude, “This was a big difference from the last big freeze. You stepped up when others did not or said they would. You don’t know how much we appreciate you. Thank you all so much.”
