The Bandera County Commissioners voted 3-1 earlier this month to proceed with an application to the state comptroller to use SB 22 grant funds to provide salary increases for Bandera County Constables.
The request to increase base salary by $4,00 was delivered to the Commissioners’ Court from all four county constables.
Constables currently make just under $41,000 a year before additional allowances.
County Judge Richard Evans said the state pays 25 percent of the salary, with taxpayers making up the difference.
“If we do that, you’ll be making more than the justices of the peace,” he said.
“We protect the justices of the peace,” said Greg Spengler, constable for Precinct 2. “We’re out there risking our lives a little bit more.
Jack Moseley was the sole vote opposed to the motion.
