Lady Bulldogs defeather Hondo Owls

The Lady Bulldogs went head-to-head with the Hondo Lady Owls on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the Competition Gym in Bandera.

The Lady Bulldogs went head-to-head with the Hondo Lady Owls on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the Competition Gym in Bandera.

The action was rough and ready as the Lady Bulldogs led most of the game. The final score after a fierce game was Bandera 46 to Hondo’s 40.

Standout of the game was junior Gabby Barrera with multiple 3-point shots made from all around the key.

The game started off with two crucial blocks from freshman Rehbehka Gomez. Freshman Jessi Battle also came alive with some aggressive play against Hondo. She fought for the ball every chance she got.

At 6:21 in the first quarter, Hondo made the first basket of the game and followed it up with another at the 5:18 mark. Kinlee Lawlis stole a pass from Hondo and Brooklyn Grabs converted it into a goal. At the two-minute mark, Hondo received a technical for an intentional foul.

Barrera went to the line and sunk two shots. The score was tied 4 to 4 when Lawlis went to the goal and put two more points on the scoreboard. The end of the first quarter showed the Bulldogs at 6 points and the Owls at 4 points.

The second quarter started with another Hondo goal bringing the score to 6 points for each team. At the 6-minute mark in the second quarter, Barrera fired off a 3 to put the Bulldogs ahead 9 to 6.

Carly Serene then stole the ball from Hondo and Brooklyn Grabs converted it into points on the board for Bandera. The Bulldogs went ahead to 12 points.

Kinlee Lawlis made another basket bringing the score to 14 to 6 in Bandera’s favor.

The Bulldogs’ aggressive play caused a lot of visits to the free throw line for Hondo. Jessie Battle made a block to keep the Bulldogs ahead.

At the 2:25 mark, Hondo went to the line to shoot two more free throws, only one of which found the hoop.

Senior Calie Tripp went to the line to add two more points to the scoreboard with the Bulldogs at 18 and Hondo at 9 points. Hondo went to the baseline and shot a 3 to make the score 18 to 15 at the end of the half.

The second half opened with a Hondo 3 pointer to make the score 18 to 18. Brooklyn Grabs intercepted a Hondo pass and Barrera scored a goal to bring the score to 20 for Bandera. Barrera turned around and made another three point shot to push the Bulldogs ahead of the Owls by 5 points.

At the middle of the 3rd quarter, Hondo called a timeout. Barrera continued her consistent play and provided the Bulldogs with good positioning to set up plays.

Hondo drew a foul and made one of two shots, and then came back with two goals to bring the score to 23 to 23.

After a Bandera foul, Hondo made one of two free throws bringing the score up to 24 for the Owls, one point ahead of the Bulldogs.

Gabby Barrera made a clutch three point shot at the 1:30 mark bringing Bandera’s score to 29, but Hondo answered with a three pointer of its own to make the score 29 to 29.

After another Bandera foul, the Owls went ahead by one point. Barrera pulled a critical three pointer at the end of the 3rd quarter with just four seconds on the clock moving the Bulldogs ahead of the Owls by two points.

Barrera sank another crucial three from the top of the key at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The score went up to 35 to 30 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Hondo earned another trip to the foul line but only made one of the two shots. The Bulldogs started to consistently play more aggressively in the fourth quarter with Carly Serene taking the lead.

Taytum Moeller drew a foul and added one more point to Bandera’s score. Jessi Battle was ready to rumble in the fourth quarter fighting for every ball that came her way.

Brooklyn Grabs fouled out at the 3-minute mark. Barrera slipped in for a goal that raised Bandera’s score to 42.

Hondo found their threepoint magic and put a basket on the board bringing the score to Bandera at 42 to Hondo at 38.

After another Hondo shot for two points, Jessi Battle got control of the ball and fed it to Rehbehka Gomez under the basket for a Bandera two pointer.

Hondo got control of the ball at the 19 second mark and could not get anything to go in. Gomez put up a two pointer and drew a foul. The final score for the game was Bandera 46 to Hondo’s 40.

The Lady Bulldogs played Llano on Tuesday, Nov. 28, but no scores were available at press time.

The Lady Bulldog Varsity Basketball will play in the Poteet Tournament beginning on Thursday, Nov. 30.
