SELF-DECEPTIONS

Editor’s Note: The following is a response to a letter from John Scheutze published in last week’s paper.

I appreciate Mr. John Schuetze’s gracious, measured and history-based reply to my rather emotional letter denouncing our former (Yes.) president two weeks ago. Mr. Schuetze is correct in saying that I have no proof that any jury in any court of law in the United States has ever found (former-) President Trump guilty of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (--yet).

Furthermore, the U.S. Senate, in a mostly party-line vote, failed to find the former president guilty of either of his two impeachments by the U.S. House of Representatives (also by mostly party-line votes). So maybe, indeed, “it” is really just my little-bitty personal opinion!?

But dang! I could have just sworn that on January 6th, 2021, I heard and saw with my own (lying?) ears and eyes, through the (biased?) prism of (liberal?) broadcast TV, the (defeated) President of the United States, Donald John Trump, personally rouse and dispatch an armed army of his die-hard, violent supporters to the Capitol where they attempted to assault, disrupt and terrorize Capitol Police, Congress itself, and Trump’s ‘own’ Vice-President into nullifying the majority of state-accredited electors, and conferring the ongoing presidency back upon Trump himself! And then President Trump apparently(?) refused to call off his mutinous minions for several hours, while watching the same TV footage that we all(?) (thought we) saw, as his tumultuous mobs (maybe Antifas in disguise?) appeared to deface the inner chambers of our democracy, terrorize its elected members, and actually did bring the formal counting of electoral votes, the time-honored and legitimate business of the combined houses of the U.S. Congress, to an ignominious, but fortunately only temporary, halt.

And so I suppose the fact, that Former-President Trump has never (yet) been formally convicted of any(?) crime related to these incidents, gives himself, Mr. Schuetze and other desperate disciples the right to presume and proclaim Trump's shining innocence of any vile and libelous accusations uttered by his fanatical detractors, Democrats or disgruntled former Trump supporters and henchmen.

Yet “The times, they are a-changing.”(*1) – again? So “We’ll see what happens”(*2) – if we can believe it? After all, what is really Real?(*3) What is Truth?(*4) Why, only whatever Donald Trump says it is, of course!!
