Bandera Library Happenings

May is marching right along and the library is preparing for our annual Summer Reading Programs. For children ages five to twelve, we have a weekly program from 10 a.m. to 11: 30 a.m. on Tuesdays. If your kids are out of school or your grandkids are in town for a few weeks, be sure to register them for this fun series.

This year’s theme is Oceans of Possibilities, featuring books about the ocean. At each session, the kids get a chance to pick out their books for the week, do an activity, listen to a guest reader and participate in group arts and crafts. D

id you know children fall behind an average of two months during the summer months? And that loss is cumulative, so every summer a child can potentially have learning losses every single year.

Studies have shown that it takes reading only four to six books during the summer to prevent summer slide. The key is for kids to have access to books.

Register your child or grandchild for the library’s Summer Reading Program online at https://banderacountylibrary.org/summer-2022 or in person. The form is set up so that you can indicate the days your child will be attending just in case your family has already made any summer travel plans.

If you like working with kids or are passionate about reading, please consider volunteering for the Summer Reading Program. We would love to have the help! Contact the library to get more information.

This year the library will also be hosting a Summer Reading Challenge for adults and teens themed “Reading Around the World.” The library has a list of novels set in different parts of the world and the patron who can read the most of these titles from June 1 until August 31 will be awarded a gift card from a local restaurant.

The title list will be released on June 1, so stop by the library to pick one up or check out the June monthly newsletter being sent out at the beginning of next month.

Tomorrow, May 12, the Bandera County Gardening Club will be meeting in the Genealogy Room from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The group meets once a month to discuss strategies for dealing with any challenges to gardening in our area. All are welcome!

The Bandera Library is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Masks are recommended while in the library building. Check out our website www. banderacountylibrary.org for all up-to-date information.

Happy tales, y’all.

Mauri Guillen Fagan is the Director of the Bandera Public Library.
