FIRST RESPONDERS TEAM UP FOR RESIDENT, VISITOR SAFETY

The celestial event of the decade is upon us, as the city of Boerne and Kendall County prepare to witness a breathtaking total solar eclipse on April 8.

In anticipation of this extraordinary phenomenon, we are taking measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all residents and visitors.

From a law enforcement and public safety perspective, Boerne Police and Fire personnel as well as Kendall County Sheriff deputies, EMS and volunteer firefighters will be deployed across the county that day to ensure adequate response should the need arise.

The city and county will work throughout the weekend and the day of the eclipse. Additionally, we will be activating our emergency operation center, which will serve as the base for our operations.

This will allow all agencies to work collaboratively together to monitor activities, incidents and manage all traffic across our area. In light of the solar spectacle, we will be closing City Hall and the Patrick Heath Public Library to in-person visitors on April 8.

However, our dedicated staff will continue their work remotely or actively support city efforts throughout the day to essential services.

Additionally, Boerne’s Streets Department will have two roadside assistance trucks deployed to help anyone within the city limits who runs out of gas or runs into car troubles. Drivers can call 830-249-9511, option 1, to request a truck be dispatched.

To accommodate the increased activity, Waste Management will be supplying an additional trash collection truck, to allow for earlier completion of trash pick-up. All residents will need to have their trash/recycle bins by the curb no later than 7 a.m.

For residents and visitors who plan to enjoy the day along the historic Hill Country Mile, there will be numerous stations with port-o-potties.

For those seeking the optimal vantage point, paid parking will be available at Boerne City Lake. City residents can secure a parking spot for $20, while noncity residents can enjoy the view for $40.

All other Boerne parks and city facilities with parking spaces will remain open to the public.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, arrive early and adhere to any safety guidelines provided by local authorities. Join us on April 8 as we come together to witness this celestial marvel and create lasting memories in the heart of Boerne.

EYE SAFETY TIPS FOR VIEWING A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

Here are some important safety guidelines to follow during a total solar eclipse.

— View the sun through eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer during the partial eclipse phases before and after totality.

— You can view the eclipse directly without proper eye protection only when the moon completely obscures the sun’s bright face, during the brief and spectacular period known as totality.

— You’ll know it’s safe when you can no longer see any part of the sun through eclipse glasses or a solar viewer.

— As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright Sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the Sun.
