Gobbles of fun at turkey shoot
A local volunteer fire department’s annual event drew a big, enthusiastic crowd last Saturday. The Castle Lake Ranch Volunteer Fire Department fired up its yearly Turkey Shoot for the 35th year.
“We have 15 shooters at a time shooting at paper targets and the shooter with best score wins a frozen turkey,” said Fire Chief Paul Miller.
The venue’s event is held on the first Saturday in November in recognition of the first day of the hunting season. “This is our largest fundraiser, and it pays for almost all our bills including fuel for the trucks and maintenance. It is a very important to our fire department,” Miller said.
Walking around the event was fun and informational.
A number of people of different ages carried guns safely for the shoots, and it was easy to see parents teaching gun safety to their youngsters.
In additions to raffles and a silent auction, the event also featured a market with various items to allow people to get a jumpstart on their holiday shopping. The department extends thanks to the volunteers, shooters, shoppers, market vendors, Turkey Lurkey’s Craftivities participants and the Bandera 4H Shotgun Team.
