Medina volleyball kicks off season with tourney honors

Medina Lady Cat volleyball earned a pair of wins on Tuesday, August 13, to begin the season.

The Lady Cats season opener was on the road against host Sabinal.

Sabinal jumped out to an early lead but the Medina team would not back down and came back to win the first set by a score of 25-20.

After a second set loss, the Lady Cats rebounded to win sets three and four by scores of 25-7 and 25-18.

Leading the way for the Lady Cats were Ahnika Grassie with 6 kills and Sienna Carter with 13 digs.

Brooke Mancha aided in the effort with 4 service aces while Ella Castillo earned 2 blocks.

Following the victory, the Lady Cats were matched up with the Lady Crushers from Knippa.

Medina started strong and never looked back, winning the match in three straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-22, 25-15.

Mancha led the Lady Cats with 7 kills. Kailey McCabe and Grassie each amassed 4 aces, while Crista Zirkel led in digs with 9.

Next up for the Lady Cats was attending the Annual Heart of a Mustang Tournament in Natalia.

Medina’s winning ways continued, concluding the weekend with a 6 and 1 season record and 4 and 1 tournament record to take Runner-Up Championship honors.

The Lady Cats defeated Pearsall, Floresville JV, Dilley and Knippa in the round-robin style tournament.

Hallie Kunz and Audrey Gatlin earned All-Tournament honors.

Kunz compiled 10 kills, 60 assists and 15 aces while Gatlin completed the tournament with 73 digs, 9 aces, and a high passing percentage.

Lady Cats will return to action August 23 as they travel to Sabinal to play in their JV and Varsity Tournament.
