Sheriff Dan Butts released a statement Monday thanking the community and his county staff following his runoff defeat in the Bandera County Republican primary runoff on May 28.

The full statement was as follows: “THANK YOU!!! It has been my pleasure to live and work in Bandera County for over forty-four years and my honor to have served as your Sheriff for the past twelve years.

As a Sheriff you serve at the pleasure of the citizens of the County. This year we were unable to win the republican nomination.

My term as Sheriff will end December 31st and on January 1, 2025, I will no longer be your Sheriff.

There are a number of people who worked to assist me in my re-election bid and I would like to recognize their hard work and thank them for their efforts.

I would also like to thank all the citizens of Bandera County for their support and assistance over the years and for allowing me to serve as their Sheriff. [sic]” Butts, first elected in 2012, received 1,193 votes for 42.08 percent of the vote.

Challenger and now Sheriff- Elect Josh Teitge received 1,642 votes for 57.92 percent of the vote.

“What an incredible Runoff! I would like to thank all of our Elections Officials and Poll Workers for selflessly sacrificing their time to ensure another seamless election process! I am honored and humbled to have been selected by the Citizens of Bandera County to serve as our new Sheriff,” Teitge wrote in a Facebook post May 29.
