Architect outlines possible project for Hackberry Mansion

Architect Lyndsay Thorn of Thorn Architects in San Antonio presented to a joint meeting of the Bandera City Council and the Bandera Planning and Zoning Commission on Tuesday, July 13, outlining the plans for a possible development project at 1007 Hackberry (the Mansion).

Mayor pro tem Rebecca Gibson emphasized the meeting was an informational session only and no action would be taken on the presentation.

The Mansion property is owned by Steve Ball from Chester, England.

Thorn said he was presenting the plan to the Council and Planning and Zoning Commission for their input.

Thorn showed the group an architectural plan for five connected duplexes consisting of 10 individual units.

The plans called for two-story duplexes which will front onto Pecan Street. These homes would range from 1600 to 2300 square feet each with a three-bedroom two bath design.

Thorn reiterated that the residences would be for sale and not presented as rental units.

Thorn projected the ideal cost of the individual units to be between $440,000 to $450,000 each.

Thorn said that he intended to respect the style of Bandera and would design the townhomes with a Texas barn like design to fit in with the Western flavor of the city.

“Real simple, real clean and I think it would fit really well into Bandera,” Thorn stated.

Thorn said his designs were modern, open, and contemporary to attract youthful buyers to the project.

Gibson and Mayor Suzanne Schauman agreed that this development “jived” with all the community dialogue and what has been going on with the masterplan development.

Gibson also remarked that one of the biggest needs in the city was residential housing.

Mr. Thorn also spoke about plans for a row of business storefronts with small living quarters above each unit to front onto 11th Street.

He also said that the project would develop the Mansion into office spaces.
