Medina track starts new season
Medina High School’s track season kicked off last week on home turf, and the district’s athletic director is excited about the possibilities ahead.
“Success is happening in Medina, and there is no telling how good this Track and Field program can be,” said Culy Doyle, Medina ISD’s athletic director.
Cully said he was very happy with how Thursday’s meet went, categorizing it as “awesome.”
“It was a great way for kids to get involved and jump into events in a low key environment. I was proud to see our kids compete and do their best,” he said about last week’s meet, which featured Harper, Utopia and Antonian as well as Medina.
Doyle said the four-team meet had limited numbers because each team there, including Medina, did not have everyone on their team, stressing the athletes who were present competed well and gained valuable experience going into the next several meets.
In addition to Doyle, this year’s coaches are Melissa Pump, Mark Coley, Cole Brown and Greg Harbour, who came out of retirement to return as a coach.
“We are so lucky to have one of the most successful coaches that has ever come through Medina be back with us,” said Doyle, saying the district is lucky to have him. “He was a huge part of our success many years ago in Medina, and he just loves kids, knows the sport and is a great motivator.
Medina will host another meet on February 17 before they travel to Harper for a meet. After that the team returns home for a meet in Bandera on March 3.
A busy March for the team continues with a meet at Knippa on the 9th, Alamo City Mile and Steeplechase on the 12th, then back home for a meet on the 16th.
The team travels to Center Point on March 24 before competing in Texas relays on the 25th and 26th, then closing out the S month with a Thursday meet in Harper on the 31st.
District competition will be held in Medina on April 9. Area competition will be held at Tilden McMullen on April 20. Regionals will be on April 29 and 30 at League City, with state competition rounding out the year in Austin May 12-14.
Doyle said Medina’s goal is to excel in Track and Field since that success branches out and helps athletes in other sports.
“The future is bright, and success will come,” he said.
