JROTC clean up highway
On April 2, volunteer cadets from the BHS Navy JROTC participated in another successful roadside cleanup as part of April’s Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off month which is a part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s litter prevention program.
Participants were Tyler Mellen, Keaton Sarver, Rayce Dinova, Benito Kelly-Giles, Jacob Tuma, Nathan Brown (BHS NHS volunteer), CDR (ret) Mike Gard, Jackson Hutzler, Elijah Casteel, Troy Jones, Devan James and Luis Martinez.
They collected 15 bags of garbage from a portion of their Adopt-a-Highway section between Pipe Creek Post Office and the Barrel House Convenience Store.
For several of the cadets, this was their second or third time to participate in a clean-up since the NJROTC adopted this section of highway last fall.
“I think it’s just really fun,” first year cadet Jackson Hutzler said. “You get to be alongside your classmates and get to know each other better. It’s also kinda cool when people honk in appreciation. And this time, there was a man who stopped and gave us cold sodas and water. I think that’s really nice, cause in small ways we can come together and help each other out.”
The cadets were treated to a grilled hamburger and hotdog lunch at Bulldog stadium after their hard work was done.
Next up for the BHS Navy JROTC cadets will be a field trip to the Great Texas Airshow at Randolph AFB, featuring the USAF Thunderbirds flight demonstration team.
