Friday night bingo defies age
As the bingo games started at the Pipe Creek VFD last Friday, Bingo Chairperson Mae Vion Meyer kept an eye on the full house of folks, mostly seniors, but also middle-aged, teens and younger players.
Although COVID-related closures impacted the event, Meyer said the event is showing a resurgence.
Several people at a Friday event earlier this month were having a lot of fun despite the differences in age.
“We love taking our grandchildren to Friday night Bingo; it’s a great learning experience for them. They are here for the summer with me from New Braunfels,” said Dawn “Mimi” Medley, as her husband and co-grandparent “Paw Paw” Reese Meaux nodded in agreement.
The grandchildren are Maddie Medley, 10, and Jax Medley, 7.
The kids played along with their grandparents throughout the night, and Jax even won a bingo.
“In the last two or three months we have been making a comeback” she said, pointing to the house of people. “We are almost back to we were before COVID.”
The chairwoman said Pipe Creek VFD needs all of kinds of fire trucks, especially for two-story structures.
Meyer added the bingo games cannot make all of the payments needed, but it certainly helps.
Pipe Creek VFD Bingo draws bingo players from Bandera, Helotes, Boerne, Lakehills, and more.
Everyone at the event seemed happy about something, including Kitchen Cooks James and Norma Walker.
The Walkers served food and drinks throughout the night while Ball Caller David Magness read out the latest ball.
Pipe Creek Bingo is held at 7 p.m. on Fridays at 1378 FM 1283 Pipe Creek.
